What is coaching anyway?

Coaching is a term that’s thrown around a lot these days, so I wanted to provide a clear definition of what it means, so you know exactly what you’re getting into if you choose to work with me.

Coaching is a partnership between a coach and client that supports personal and professional growth through a process of self-discovery.

First and foremost, coaching is about YOU–your goals, hopes, and preferences. I put you in the driver’s seat because you are the expert in your own skills, behaviors, and experience.

My job is to create a supportive space to explore those areas and collaborate on potential ways to tap into your creativity, overcome limiting beliefs, and implement changes that will help you achieve what you want out of your career.

My practice is informed by several coaching philosophies, including:

  • Fulfillment coaching: Creates opportunities to articulate your unique values and define a personal vision, so you can align your choices with what motivates you.

  • Narrative coaching: Examines and reframes the stories we tell about ourselves to identify new pathways for growth.

  • Positive psychology: Draws on a person’s strengths to improve well-being and performance.

  • Cognitive behavioral coaching: Identifies links between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to break down barriers to success.

Coaching FAQs

  • All of my coaching sessions last 50 minutes. At the beginning of each session, I’ll ask you what you’d like to focus on for that particular session, so we can address what is most valuable to you. From there, we’ll dive into what’s on your mind. I’ll ask thought-provoking (and sometimes challenging) questions or introduce coaching tools to encourage you to experiment with your thinking or to see things in a new light. To wrap up the session, we’ll talk about your main takeaways and what you’ll be carrying with you into the week(s) ahead.

  • While coaching and therapy both support individuals through a process of self-discovery and development, there are several important differences. Therapy is offered by a licensed clinical professional who is trained to assess and treat mental health diagnoses. This means that it most often focuses on an individual’s past and present. On the other hand, coaching is primarily centered on the present and future, as it focuses on defining and working toward an individual’s goals for themselves. While coaching conversations may uncover deep-seated behaviors or mindsets that provide helpful context, coaching is not intended to analyze or diagnose past experiences and their impact. While I am a trained, certified coach through Northwestern University, there is no particular credential required to be a coach.

  • Coaching and consulting are also focused on helping a client achieve their goals. Coaching has a stronger focus on development and growth, with a coach guiding a client through a process of self-discovery. Consulting has a much stronger focus on problem-solving, with consultants offering specific advice and solutions to clients, depending on the situation. While I may offer advice from time to time via coaching, it’s a rare occurrence, as I prioritize my clients arriving at solutions that work and are sustainable for them.

  • Coaching can help people improve their performance in multiple ways. Specific topics that might bring people to coaching include defining leadership vision/values, achieving a better work-life balance, overcoming imposter syndrome, strengthening relationships, navigating paths to promotion, managing conflict, or improving prioritization, time management, or delegation skills.

  • While I cannot guarantee specific outcomes, as coaching is a highly personal process and each individual is in charge of their own actions and decisions, at the end of each session, my goal is that you can articulate key takeaways and applications for the week. Long story short is that you'll get out of coaching what you put in. I encourage you to think of coaching as investing in yourself as an individual and leader. To make the most out of that investment, you'll not only have to show up and engage in our regular sessions, but also commit to practicing and reflecting on what we discuss in between meetings.

  • In my experience, clients typically are able to achieve results in the 8-10 week timeframe outlined in my packages. If you're interested in exploring alternative options, please contact me to discuss!
